Surfaced Plywood or MDO (Medium Density Overlay) signs have a durable, weather resistant enamel coating. They are a common material for signmaking, because they are sturdy, flat, economical, and can be made in nearly any size, up to 5' x 10' per sheet. By tiling sheets, billboard scale signs can be produced.
